Sitting just fifty miles from New York City, Fire Island looms large in pop culture for its laissez faire lifestyle, yet what’s less known is that it’s also a beacon for families who have been making homes on the island for generations. The babes are a group of inspiring women who reared their children every summer on Fire Island, starting the 1960s.

Several of the babes are now in their nineties, and as the film progresses one of them crosses the threshold into triple digits. While some of the babes have been friends for sixty-plus years, others lived within a block or two from each other for the same amount of time and never once said hello. The COVID pandemic and a gregarious younger babe were the catalysts that brought the babes together at last.

What is most striking about the film is the bond that is forged between these women through their daily rendezvous, and the fact that this bond becomes a sustaining and nourishing component of their lives. They meet every day at the same bay beach, eat together, talk and swim. And it is this simple act of coming together once a day that has enriched their lives beyond measure.
